Charlotte Business Journal Names Womble Bond Dickinson’s Minnie Kim a 40 Under 40 Award Winner
Now in its 28th year, the 40 Under 40 Awards recognize 40 Charlotte-area professionals under the age of 40 who are making great things happen not only in their careers, but also in their communities.
In eight years of practice, Minnie has established herself as a go-to lawyer for intellectual property litigation. Her biggest litigation win came in March 2021, when she worked with John Morrow to represent Womble Bond Dickinson client Nexus Technologies in a federal patent inventorship dispute in the Western District of North Carolina. After a lengthy litigation and trial, the jury returned a verdict in favor of Nexus, finding it the true inventors and owners of the patents. The jury further awarded Nexus nearly $32 million in total damages.
Minnie also is committed to community service, serving as a pro bono attorney for the Safe Alliance in Charlotte. The Safe Alliance provides a wide range of services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. One of those services is helping victims obtain a permanent order of protection from their abuser—and this is where Minnie focuses her volunteer work.
She represents victims in court proceedings to obtain 50B protective orders. The process typically involves interviewing the victims and learning as much as she can about their case. Then, Minnie advocates for the client before a judge, arguing that the client’s safety is in danger and a protective order is warranted and necessary.
“Once I started reading the statistics and meeting these victims, I felt I had to do something,” she said. “Helping these victims get out of that situation is important to me.”
Minnie has also dedicated her time on pro bono work representing veterans, especially those who are in the appeals process for a military discharge.
In addition, Minnie has taken leadership roles in a number of community organizations. For example, she was elected the Vice President of Communications during Charlotte APABA’s inaugural year, which is the Charlotte-area affiliate of the National Association of Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA). NAPABA promotes justice, equity and opportunity for Asian Pacific Americans in the legal profession.
Minnie also is a Sustaining Member of the Junior League of Charlotte and served a four-year term as a Board Member of the Northwestern University Alumni Association. She also recently accepted a role as Charlotte Office Liaison to Women of Womble Bond Dickinson (W.O.W.), the firm’s affinity group for women lawyers.
This year’s Charlotte Business Journal 40 Under 40 award winners will be recognized at an Oct. 7 event at the Grand Bohemian Hotel.
